When trying to eat healthy, it can be hard to stave off cravings for foods that are rich and creamy. We all know the internal struggle of wanting to have good health but also wanting the satisfaction of a treat. To fulfill both of these goals many have turned to the oh-so-decadent avocado.
The avocado has boomed in popularity over the last few years because of its taste, versatility and its healthy properties. But what makes avocados healthy? We spoke with Kat Benson, a registered dietitian with Top Nutrition Coaching to find out more about the nutritional contents of one of our favorite fruits.
How many calories are in an avocado?
Avocados can be a little bit dense in calories. According to the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, a whole avocado contains about 240 calories. However, this is totally manageable in the context of a well-rounded diet.
However, calories are not the only determinant of whether or not something is healthy. Benson talks about some of the benefits of avocados, “Avocados contain an array of health benefits including healthy fats (specifically unsaturated, heart-healthy fats) and micronutrients, like potassium and other vitamins and minerals.
She adds, “Avocados are also a surprising source of fiber. Half a medium avocado contains around 5g of dietary fiber. And because fats can help increase absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (vitamins A, D, K, and E), they make for a great addition to any vegetable-rich meal or as part of a balanced snack.”
Is avocado good for weight loss?
It can be. It may be a good “swap” if you are craving foods that feel rich. They do have a significant amount of calories, which means that you may need to take in less calories in other foods you are eating that day. If weight loss is the goal, you still need to consume enough calories to keep your body functioning, and avocados contain lots of healthy nutrients.
Is it OK to eat an avocado every day?
If that’s your jam, sure! You can spread it on toast in the morning, drop some in your smoothie, and wrap it into your burrito at night – if you so desire. However, it’s important to keep track of the calories so that you don’t go overboard. It’s also important to incorporate a variety of fats from your diet, like those that come from olive oil, nuts and fish.
Are avocados good for you? They may be worth the up-charge.
